Do I need to create an account to use FermenTree?
No. FermenTree has no accounts and no sign-up. Open the app and start logging your ferments right away.
What are F1 and F2?
F1 and F2 are a batch's two fermentation stages. F1 is the first stage, where a batch starts. When you finish F1, part of it is carried forward as the starter for a new F1, and the rest moves into F2 for its second stage, right through to the fridge.
How does splitting a batch into a new starter work?
When you finish F1, FermenTree automatically carries a portion forward — 20% by default — as the starter for a brand-new F1, while the remainder continues into F2. You can change that default split percentage in Settings, and you can also manually split any batch into two separate cultures at other points, branching your lineage further.
How does FermenTree predict how long a stage will take?
FermenTree looks at your own fermentation history, and the current temperature if you have a HomeKit sensor connected, to estimate how long the active stage is likely to take. It's a guide to help you know roughly when to check back in, not a guarantee — every ferment is a little different.
How does the HomeKit temperature feature work?
If you have a HomeKit-compatible temperature sensor set up in the Home app, FermenTree can read its temperature directly to help you monitor a ferment and improve its stage predictions. The connection stays between your device, HomeKit, and FermenTree.
What does the Apple Intelligence insight feature do?
After you rate a finished batch, FermenTree can use Apple Intelligence to look across your ratings and batch history and surface patterns — for example, which conditions tend to produce your best results. This runs entirely on-device using Apple's on-device intelligence and background processing; nothing about your ferments is sent to FermenTree, TotalPunch Development, or any AI service.
What do the NFC tags do?
An NFC tag stores a link to a specific batch's record in the app. Tap your phone against a tagged jar to jump straight to that batch in its lineage — nothing else is written to the tag.
How do I keep my batches in sync across my devices?
Turn on iCloud sync in Settings. Your data then syncs through your own private iCloud account — TotalPunch Development never sees it. Make sure you're signed into the same iCloud account and have iCloud Drive enabled on every device.
Where is my data stored, and how do I back it up?
Everything is stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud sync, your data is also backed up automatically through your private iCloud account. Without iCloud sync enabled, your data lives only on that device, so we'd recommend turning it on if you want a backup.
Is any of my data shared with TotalPunch Development or anyone else?
No. There's no server, no analytics, and no advertising in FermenTree, and Apple Intelligence insights are generated entirely on-device. See the full privacy policy for details.
